Hi, I’m Luz Marina!

I’m an Oakland resident born in Cali, Colombia and raised in Queens, New York. My work is inspired by the playful and whimsical world of dreams and nature. Working in a variety of media, I transform drawings, paintings, and 2D prints (linocuts, collagraphs, etchings, and monotypes) into sculptural artists’ books and installations. Intrigued by the experimental nature of printmaking, I employ many printmaking approaches to my work: gouging, scratching, collaging and layering pigment to achieve highly textured surfaces.

I currently teach at California College of the Arts, and in my spare time, you’ll find me salsa dancing, biking, and cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

 Resume

As an educator, I write daily quotes on the board to inspire students. These two are my all time favorites!

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

— Anais Nin

“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost.”

— Martha Graham

Talks that inspire me…
